About the Artist
Debra King was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She moved to California, and has resided in San Francisco for the past 25 years. She is married to the artist, Dennis King, and has two lovely teenage daughters, Katie and Laura. Many people in the community know Debra from her wonderful preschool, the Debra King School, where she has worked for sixteen years.
Debra began her very first quilting project following major surgery for breast cancer. Unable to work or be active, she needed something productive to do in order to help her recover. She hand made her first quilt while in bed during recovery and hasn't stopped.
Debra is an active participant in the Hunters Point Shipyard artist community. For 22 years, Hunters Point Naval Shipyard has housed the largest artist community in the US. In the former Navy submarine barracks, offices, mess halls, kitchens and warehouses, more than 250 artists now have their studios. The studios are open twice a year, at the Spring Open Studio and again at the Fall Open Studio. Debra is located in Building 101,
Studio 1302.
Debra has also exhibited at the Marin Quilt and Needle Arts Show and the Pacific International Quilt Festival. In 2006, Debra's quilt "Big Red" won a Judge's Choice ribbon at the Festival.
